GulfCoastWeekend.com found out some good tips.
It’s one of summer’s best and most popular fruits: the watermelon. They are cool, refreshing, sweet and juicy as it makes for a great snack. Next time you are in the grocery store, take some of the guess work out of picking the perfect watermelon. Heath Steede with Mississippi State’s George County Extension Center gives us some tips and some information about what makes the watermelon sweet or not.
1. Tap on it. Listen for a deep, good, firm sound.
2. Look for a yellow spot on the watermelon. The more yellow, the riper it is.
3. Look for a dull one more than a shiny watermelon.
4 A. strong, consistent stripe pattern indicates a good one.
5. The more hot and dry the melons grow in, the less sweet the fruit will be.
Hopefully with these tips, you can become a master of picking the perfect watermelon.
You can also ask the growers when you visit local Farmer’s Markets and if REALLY love the watermelons, check out the Hope Watermelon Festival in Arkansas or the What-A-Melon Festival in Center, Texas.
