The biggest fall festival in the Ark-La-Tex returns with great music and more.
The Red River Revel (RRR) creates new experiences every year. Downtown Shreveport’s Festival Plaza transforms into musical stages, a foodie extravaganza, an arts market and place where kids can have fun. The dates for 2019 run from September 28-October 6. RRR organizer Christy Long says “It’s a huge party downtown.”
RRR focuses on bringing the best in up-and-coming music to Shreveport. Many now-famous acts came to the Revel before hitting it big. According to Long, musicians playing in previous Revels included Ketih Urban, The Record Company, The Revivalists, The Band Perry and Colt Ford. So many acts come to town there are two stages set up underneath the pavilions. Two of 2019 headliners are Chase Bryant and Bishop Gunn. Everyday enjoy the entertainment from artists representing rock, blues, jazz and more.
Many people eagerly anticipate the Red River Revel because of the food. In addition to the usual fair food served at RRR, you can find specialty foods that are only available during the nine days. Try the brisket grilled cheese sandwiches or the Mardi Gras Waffles. Snack on nachos or a slice of Muffuletta Pizza. Be on the lookout for new delights such as the Neon Quesadilla (also known as the Kaleidoscopadilla).
Another component of the Revel is the art. Over 80 visual artists will show their creations. Something new for 2019 will be the Emerging Artist area with 32 artists showcasing their work. Shop for that one-of-a-kind gift for a loved one or for yourself. Find them along the side of the train depot building and alongside the railroad tracks.
According to Long, one of the big things about Revel is that it is “Supported of the community, supported by the community and for the community. So we partner with over 30 non-profit organizations… They volunteer. They provide children’s activities. And they run food booths.”
Kids can have a blast at the Revel. They have their own performance stage as well as free children’s arts activities in the Children’s Area. The arts education programs utilizes physical activities as well as an exhibition on the historical importance of famed Louisiana artist Clementine Hunter. In addition to the art experience, everyone can enjoy the amusement rides. Some rides do charge.
