August is here and school time is slowely approaching which means summer is coming to a close! So parents, before you get back into the scheduled routine of school with your children; here are some last minute summer things to do in the Ark-La-Tex.
R.W. Norton Art Gallery
This art gallery hosts numerous exhibitions and events through out the year, which means there is last minute activities that you can do by yourself or with the family.
- Family Food Truck Night – This event is happens every night on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. This is an event you can enjoy with the entire family by having a hot dog from the Hot Dawg Hut, a Cajun dish from Jimbeaux and Son, and sweet Italian ice from Sweetport food trucks. You can go out, grab and a blanket, and relax under the trees while the kids play around on the field.
- Twilight Talkies – This event happens every Friday night at the gallery. You can bring a blanket and a lawn chair to lounge out under the stars while watching a movie playing that Friday night.

Splash Kingdom Water Park
For that last minute summer fun in the heat, Splash Kingdom is a great place to go and get that last feel of the water before the start of the school year. There are many things to do from their water slides, volleyball sand court, fun treats and eats, as well as water activities for the little kids. Different weekly events they have are:
- Toddler Tuesdays and Thursday- from 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. parents can bring their toddlers 5 years and younger swim from $5 plus tax.
- Family Nights – Every Wednesday and Friday night from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. and you can get an evening swim when it is not too hot for $10 per person

This lake will be a great way to go on a trip with family or friends to relax before summer is over. It is between Henderson and Smith counties in Texas and the largest lake in Tyler. Lake Palestine provides recreation and outdoor activities for everyone, with boating, water skiing, house boating, canoeing, biking, fishing and more. If you are a road trip type of person or family, they have a section of the waterfront by the lake side where you can view the horizon of the lake while in your car or RV.

Nacogdoches Azalea Trail
This is the largest trail in the East Texas area. The start of the trail is at the Azalea Garden which is beautiful with different colored flowers and historic districts. The trail spans for 25 miles and it is a great summer activity to do with your family to get those last outdoor activities of sun before the kids go back to school. During the trail, you will see a beautiful landscape of the Nacogdoches city which is a site to see.

Broken Bow, Oklahoma
Broken Bow Lake
The largest, clearest, mountainous lake that you will encounter is in Broken Bow, Oklahoma at the lake. This lake is surrounded by wilderness and national forest. The Mountain Fork River flows into and out of it and is great places to sport fish and catch trout. Other activities they have are water sports like kayaking and canoeing with entertainment of those activities. The McCurtain County, which is the county the lake is in, is famous for hunting, hiking, and four-wheeling. This is also a great last minute summer idea because they have a dining area in the their patio section by the lake.
