SHREVEPORT, La. (Ark-La-Tex Weekend) - 2023 marks the tenth anniversary of the famous Gumbo Gladiators competition. For those of you new to the area, Gumbo Gladiators brings together dozens of teams to see who makes the best gumbo in North Louisiana. Mark your calendars for the afternoon of March 11, 2023 and come to Shreveport’s Festival Plaza in downtown. Admission is $1 and kids under 12 are free. Gumbo tasting samples will be available for $2 each. You will receive a People’s Choice token to vote for your favorite. The winner of Gumbo Gladiator of the People wins $300. The winners of the Seafood, Chicken & Sausage and Lagniappe categories receive $500. Tasting begins at Noon and the winners are revealed at 4 p.m.
Last year, 30 teams made 41 pots of gumbo for over 5,000 attendees. This family friendly fun event supports Volunteers for Youth Justice. They are a non-profit organization helping children, youth and families in crisis.
Looking to show off your gumbo skills?
Businesses and organizations are encouraged to register now. Deadline is February 24, 2023. There are three categories to enter: Seafood, Chicken & Sausage and Lagniappe (which is anything besides seafood, chicken and sausage). Know this before signing up. Roux must be made on site and none of that powdered or jar roux. Teams must make a minimum of eight gallons and provide your own rice. Bring ladles, too. The first ten paid teams to register receives a $100 gift card to Brookshire’s Grocery.
