What’s new in 2022 for downtown Shreveport

Things are looking good for the new year

SHREVEPORT, La. (Ark-La-Tex Weekend) -

The work continues to make downtown Shreveport a better place to work, play and live. New businesses are opening up and a historic part of the city is getting relit. We talked with Executive Director of Downtown Development Authority Liz Swaine about what we can expect this year.

Liz says that there is a lot of interest in the historic buildings downtown. Some suggestions she dropped would be a grocery market and more retail space. The building at 600 Texas Street is being remodeled to host a new concept that includes a beauty store and individual vendors setting up shop. Another set of businesses opening up in the heart of the city are new restaurants.

It’s always a good sign when new restaurants open in town. Liz introduced us to two restaurants near the Caddo Parish Courthouse, Pop N Pizza and Cookie B’s Smoothies & More. Good news is that Pop N Pizza (that used to be on Kings Highway) is now open. Cookie B’s plans to open very soon. These join the existing food venues so you can find something good to eat. Plus, Bally’s Shreveport plans to open new eateries soon.

The popularity of living downtown continues to grow. Right now, options are few for available spaces but more are on the way. Liz says that the Lee Hardware and United Jewelers buildings are being worked on and could be ready later this year. If you’re interested in condos, there’s new work at 600 Milam Street. The project to overhaul the Petroleum Tower and Uneeda Biscuit building will probably last all year so maybe in 2023 those loft apartments will come on to the market.

After the snow and ice in early 2021, a few of the trees around downtown couldn’t be saved. With the help of Shreveport Councilwoman LeVette Fuller, funds have been made available for new trees and to repair many sidewalks. A new music and entertainment venue opens later this year at the Caddo Common Park. One of the biggest things everyone will notice if they travel near downtown will be the Bakowski Bridge of Lights. The lights shine starting on Tuesday, February 2, 2022.
