Encore! Encore! You will be shouting that this season for the Shreveport Opera performances. The Shreveport Opera is coming up on their 71st season of performance acts. Their upcoming shows are Man of La Mancha and The Marriage of Figaro. Man of La Mancha is a musical version of the novel Don Quixote by author, Miguel de Carvantes. The show is Saturday, November 9 at 7:30 pm.
The Marriage of Figaro is a French opera that is based on a stage comedy by French polymath, Pierre Beaumarchais. The show is Saturday, April 18 at 7:30 pm. CANCELED
Man of La Mancha is still performing in November at the Riverview Theatre in Downtown Shreveport off of Clyde Fant Parkway.
Every year, the opera hosts the Mary Jacobs Smith Singer of the Year Competition. Twenty-four professional opera singers travel from across the United States to Shreveport to sing for the title of “Singer of the Year.” The competition is free and open to the public on March 7 and 8, 2020. Donations are accepted. Listen and watch these contestants at the chapel at First Presbyterian Church at 900 Jordan Street in Shreveport. Attendees will help choose the Shreveport-Bossier Opera Guild Audience Choice Award. The finalists begin their last performances on Sunday, March 8 at 1:30 pm. The Shreveport Opera has a educational performance program called Shreveport Opera Xpress (SOX). The SOX program consist of 4 emerging professional singers and 1 pianist and they have the opportunity to be professionally trained in opera. The program presents Opera to over 100 schools and 30,000 students around the Ark- La-Tex by performing 35-45 minute shows on valuable moral life lessons. Their mission is to expose the children/teens at these schools to the Opera community. In going to these schools, SOX hopes the children will show interest and be involved.
