The Classic Martini: 10 things you didn’t know

Our friends at Gulfcoastweekend.com did a little investigating on the martini.

Here are a few facts on the classic martini that you may not have known. There’s a surprising good amount to learn about the martini. This cocktail has a rich and interesting history — and is coming back into vogue in a big way. But the facts of the drink are absolutely fascinating.

Martinis are served in bars and restaurants all over. There’s even a bar dedicated to the chocolate martini in Las Vegas. Instead of olives, they use Rolo candies.

There’s a good reason why they are served in their own glass. The stem is long and narrow for you to hold on to without affecting the temperature of the drink. The wide rim allows you to smell the drink and that adds to the experience. Plus back in Prohibition days, the wide mouth made for quick disposal in case the police showed up.

National Martini Day is June 19 so make sure to enjoy a beverage and if someone comes up to you claiming to be James Bond, make sure to offer them a vodka martini. Don’t forget, shaken not stirred.
