Have a ball at a Mardi Gras Bal

Next to the parades, a Mardi Gras Bal is one of the best ways to experience the Carnival Season.

The balls have been around since Louisiana was a French Colony. For some krewes, the bal is a private affair for members only. Others allow the public to come witness the spectacle. Many krewes take the opportunity to formally introduce the King, Queen, and Royal Court. That happens during the Tableaux, or staged pageants where the court appears in their royal regalia. Once the king and queen cut the ceremonial first piece of king cake, things kick in to high gear with dancing and partying. Formal attire may be required at the bals.

In case you’re wondering, Mardi Gras Bal can be spelled with either 1 or 2 “L”s. Ball is English, Bal is French.

Many grand bals across Louisiana takes place around Twelfth Night (January 5-6) but others spread their out over the season. Here’s the 2019 Grand Bal Schedule.
