DIY Make Your Own Kite

Flying something you made from scratch can be very rewarding.

If you are looking for a fun creative activity to do with the family … why not make a kite? Here is a quick step by step guide on a craft that you and the kids can enjoy.

First, you will need these supplies:

Scissors

A ruler

Tape or glue

String

Two wooden dowels or sticks

A saw or anything that’s strong enough to cut through your wooden sticks (parents only please)

A pen, Sharpie, pencil or marker

Material that you want to make your kite with. For the purpose of this video we are using wallpaper, but use whatever you have laying around the house

Let’s get started …

  • Grab one of your wooden sticks …
  • Measure one stick to 15 ½ – 16 inches and mark it with your sharpie…
  • Next, grab your second wooden stick and measure it at 8 inches. With a sharpie mark the halfway point of the sixteen-inch stick that’s the intersection for your kite…
  • Grab your saw and cut through both wooden sticks
  • Now cross the sticks at an intersection and grab your glue or tape
  • Once the two sticks are taped or glued together, grab your ruler and measure 5 mm on each end of both sticks (Pace this sentence out)
  • Go back with a saw at each line and make a deep nick into the stick…
  • Next step…grab your string …
  • Tie a knot at each end of the wooden stick  … connect one point to the other…
  • Next, cut the material you are using for your kite …make sure its big enough to fit the length and width of your sticks…
  • Now draw out the shape of your kite, don’t worry it doesn’t have to be perfect or pretty
  • Fold the wallpaper over the tied strings of the kite …
  • Tape or glue all the edges down ….
  • Now tie your leftover string to the middle of your kite…
  • You can wrap the rest of your string around the other half of your wooden stick
  • Now you can choose to decorate your kite however you like… glitter …stickers …or even some old Mardi Gras beads…

And there you have it,  your very own crafty handmade kite …

Happy Flying!
