A Free Celebration of African American Inventors

Sci-Port Discovery Center plans a day of fun and education on Saturday, February 27. Professional actors from The Mahogany Ensemble Theater plan to host interactive talking experiences. “Meet” incredible African American inventors, scientists and entrepreneurs during the celebration. Another great reason to visit Sci-Port that day is that admission is FREE to the center. It also includes free admission to Sno-Port, one Adventure of Intrigue and one IMAX movie!

Sci-Port hours on February 27 run from 9:00am-4:30pm and the character presentation begin at 1:00pm and end at 3:00pm.

While exploring the Discovery Center, meet these African American inventors during the celebration

Madame C.J. Walker – the first African-American female millionaire who invented a hair care line for African American women.

George Washington Carver – an agricultural scientist and inventor who promoted planting alternative crops in cotton fields to reduce soil erosion.

Mae Jemison – the first African American female NASA astronaut to travel into space as well as an engineer and physician.

Garrett Morgan – inventor of the modern day traffic light and the first gas mask prototype.

From the press release, Dianne Clark, Executive Director of Sci-Port Discovery Center states, “This unique program provides a highly interactive opportunity to commemorate and celebrate the significant contributions several African Americans have made in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). Angelique Feaster-Evans, Founding Artist & Managing Director of the Mahogany Ensemble Theater states, “We are excited to bring Black History to life at Sci-Port.  Visitors of all ages will learn about trailblazing, innovative African American women and men that made a positive impact in the field of science”.
